Description
Experienced operator who independently runs SMT line equipment with minimal supervision. Performs line changeovers using established programs and setup documentation, troubleshoots common production issues, and ensures consistent quality output. Serves as a resource for Level I operators and contributes to maintaining line efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Independently set up and operate SMT pick-and-place machines, stencil printers, and reflow ovens across multiple product configurations using established programs and setup documentation
- Perform complete line changeovers including stencil changes, feeder setup, program loading, and first article verification
- Troubleshoot common placement errors, solder defects, and material feed issues; perform corrective adjustments such as feeder tuning, nozzle swaps, and stencil alignment to restore production
- Identify recurring equipment or process issues and escalate to the SMT supervisor or process engineering for program-level or profile-level corrections
- Conduct first article inspections to verify placement accuracy, solder paste deposition, and reflow quality before production runs
- Monitor SPI and AOI inspection results throughout production; recognize defect patterns and adjust machine parameters within established ranges
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and calibration tasks on all SMT line equipment per manufacturer recommendations
- Read and interpret bills of materials, assembly drawings, and setup documentation to ensure correct job configuration
- Identify and disposition non-conforming product per quality procedures; initiate non-conformance reports as needed
- Train and mentor Level I operators on equipment operation, feeder setup, and material handling procedures
- Monitor production metrics including placement rate, defect rate, and line uptime; report results to supervision
- Maintain accurate documentation of setup configurations, changeover logs, and maintenance records
- Follow all safety protocols and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of experience operating SMT pick-and-place equipment
- Working knowledge of SMT processes including stencil printing, component placement, and reflow soldering
- Ability to execute line changeovers and load programs using machine-specific software
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting bills of materials and assembly drawings
- Experience troubleshooting common SMT defects (tombstoning, bridging, insufficient solder, misalignment)
- Familiarity with IPC-A-610 inspection criteria for surface mount assemblies
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
- Demonstrated ability to meet production targets while maintaining quality standards
- Effective communication skills and willingness to mentor junior operators
Preferred Qualifications
- IPC-A-610 Certified IPC Specialist (CIS) certification
- IPC J-STD-001 certification
- Experience with multiple pick-and-place platforms (e.g., Juki, Fuji, Yamaha, Panasonic)
- Experience working in an AS9100-certified environment
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality standards and 6S principles
